The Swiss research institutions receive a large part of their available funds from their respective cantons or from the confederation. In addition to these sources, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is the most important source of funding for scientific research in Switzerland.
Since October 2013, Open Access publication costs can be billed to the SNSF via the project budget. Since July 2014, the SNSF has an extended Open Access policy, which also includes Open Access book publications. This was formulated after several discussions with publishers.
